Two rivers and one hill – new eco tourism products along Drava, Dunube and Papuk

In April 2013 began the implementation of eco-tourism project that connects the mountain and lowland region of Eastern Slavonia and Baranja. “Two rivers and one hill –  new eco-tourism products of Drava, Danube, and Papuk” is a project created and implemented by the Association for Nature and Environment Protection Green Osijek in partnership with National Park Danube-Drava and Public Institution Papuk Nature Park.

The project is co-financed by the European Union within the IPA cross-border program Hungary-Croatia, and the total value of the project amounts is 1.021.266, 70 EUR. The project is implemented in four protected areas – Kopački Rit Nature Park, Park Nature Papuk and Regional Park Mura-Drava Croatia and National park Dunav-Drava in Hungary. The project aims to provide a model of sustainable economic development and management of natural resources in the region along the Mura-Drava-Danub introducing new eco-tourism products and cross-border cooperation.

Association Green Osijek will renew the existing infrastructure in the Eco Centre Zlatna Greda, and will therefore for the work with children equip new classrooms in which to conduct educational and interactive workshops and schools in nature. Environment Eco Centre will be equipped with fun educational park that will represent a unique educational fun outdoors. Children and adults will be through interesting games and eco library learn new knowledge about nature, biodiversity, sustainable development and eco-tourism. Infrastructure for eco-tourists will be built – driveway in Eco center, rest area with an open combustion chamber for the fire, parking for bikes and cars. Eco Centre will be renewed within the standards of restoration of protected cultural objects. New eco-tourism activities will be created, such as, canoeing, cycling tours, photo safari tours in the nature park Kopacki Rit, the Danube and the Regional park Mura Drava, for which the project will provide new equipment.

National Park Danube-Drava from Hungary will turn research station Vízvár into eco tourism center which will teach visitors of protected natural values. Tourist Reception Centre Drávaszentes infrastructure will be improved and education center Szentborbás will be renewed. The plan is also to build shelters for injured birds that visitors can observe and learn about them and about the importance of their protection. A new educational path to Drávaszabolcs will be established with accompanying infrastructure, and new bikes, canoes and a van and trailer will be bought for new eco tourism activities. For the educational needs of the Museum of the White Stork in Kolked will be acquired benches, tables and interactive whiteboards.

Nature Park  Papuk will adapt the existing educational path along the lake Jankovac for people with special needs. The plan is construction of a children’s playground and outdoor classrooms so that children can learn about species and habitats of the Nature Park Papuk. The plan is also design of educational programs and envirnomental workshops as well as buying and provideing necessary equipment for carrying out education.For the purpose of development of equestrian tourism is planned to highlight three horse tracks and construction of rest areas for horses and riders in the form of canopies to accommodate horses with a manger for food and containers for water supply and gazebo where riders can rest. Marking of hiking trails, setting up panels with hiking maps,markings of individual stations to Slavonian mountain trail and the construction of rest areas and shelters for hikers are also in the plan.

The project will after the renovation and construction of new infrastructure and the creation of new eco-tourism facilities connect cross-border region and protected natural areas in a unique eco-tourism offer that will be promoted to tourist boards, agencies, schools and the media.
