Today we celebrate the Danube day in all 14 countys of the Danube region.
Danube with his tributaries creates one of the most important river systems in Europe. Danube basin has historically played a key role in political, socio – economic and cultural development of Central and Eastern Europe. This international river with it’s tributaries covers 817,000 km2 or about 10% of continental Europe. From the Schwarzwald to the Black Sea, this river is longer than 2,850 kilometers and connects more than 80 million people from Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatian, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine.
Rivers are crucial for life, food, water and recreation. The Danube wetlands filter contaminated water and provide shelter for more than 320 species of birds, as well as many species of fish, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. Therefore the Danube is very important for the survival of wild animals. Nevertheless, the Danube and the surrounding areas are facing serious losses in the last century. Only 20% of the Danube floodplains are saved and only half of them are in very good condition.
Through the Croatia Danube flows from Batina to Ilok with sump 138 km long. With the river Drava he creates world-renowned wetland phenomenon and the second largest fish hatchery on the Danube, Kopački Rit Nature Park
